What To Do if You’ve Been Arrested in Mississauga, Brampton, or the GTA
What to do if you’ve been arrested?
If you’ve been arrested, you have the right to remain silent and you have the right to speak to legal counsel. You have no obligation to answer any of the questions being asked by the police.
It is always best to remain silent since anything you say to the police regarding your case will almost always be used as evidence against you in court. There is absolutely nothing wrong with remaining silent and it will not put you at a disadvantage, even if it feels like you’re being uncooperative with police.
Clearly state that you’ll need to speak to your lawyer. Then call Robert Christie immediately to discuss your case so you can understand your rights and plan your best defence.
What to do if the police call you?
If the police are contacting you to investigate what they believe to be a crime, you are not obligated to answer the call.
If they are investigating a crime in which you are not the suspect, they are likely wanting to gather evidence. It’s up to you whether or not you want to co-operate with the police to assist them in their investigation.
However, if the police are contacting you to investigate a crime in which YOU are the suspect, you should speak to a lawyer immediately. Speaking to a lawyer can help you understand your rights and help you assess whether or not it’s in your best interest to speak to the police, or whether you are required to do so. These conditions will depend on the circumstances of the investigation.
If you are being contacted by police regarding an ongoing investigation, contact criminal defence lawyer Robert Christie today to plan your best course of action.
